Know when you're ready — not just hopeful.
The Proficient Path is our step-by-step route to passing the IRS Special Enrollment Examination (SEE) — the three-part exam that makes you an Enrolled Agent, a federally authorized tax practitioner who can represent taxpayers before the IRS. Across all three parts and 36 units, it measures your mastery and tells you exactly where you stand, so nothing about test day is left to guesswork.

Preparedness you can measure
Most candidates walk into the SEE hoping they've done enough. Independent, self-study learners need something better than hope — an honest, objective read on whether each topic is actually exam-ready. That's what the Proficient Path gives you: a rating on every unit, updated as you practice, so you always know what to work on next and when a unit is genuinely done.
Every unit, rated red, yellow, or green
As you practice a unit, it moves along the path. Here's what each level means.
Needs revision
You've started the unit but haven't cleared the bar yet. The app points you straight to the topics where you're losing points, so your study time goes where it matters.
Almost there
You've scored 75% or higher once or twice. You clearly know the material — a couple more strong runs and it's locked in for good.
Proficient
You've scored 75% or higher three separate times on the unit. One good run can be luck; three shows durable mastery. This unit is exam-ready.
Reach Proficient by proving it — three times
The rule is deliberately simple, and deliberately hard to fake.
Practice the unit
Work the unit in Study mode to learn, then Exam mode to test yourself under real conditions. Every attempt is scored and saved to your account.
Clear 75%, three times
Each attempt that scores 75% or higher counts once toward the unit. Hit that bar on three separate attempts and the unit turns green — Proficient. See the questions you would be working through in Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.
Track the whole part
Each part shows how many units are Proficient at a glance, so you can see a full part come together and know when you're ready to sit it.
Answer positions are shuffled and questions are drawn fresh each time, so you can't game the bar by memorizing a pattern — you have to actually know the material. That's the point.
Do the work, sit with confidence
If you've walked the Proficient Path and still don't pass, we'll help you finish the job — on us.
Reach Proficient on your selected unit as an active subscriber, sit the exam, and if you don't pass, we'll add 3 months of Premium free so you can keep studying and pass next time — at no extra cost.
The terms, in plain English
- Be an active paid subscriber (Monthly or Annual) at the time you sit the exam.
- Reach Proficient on your selected unit — 75% or higher, three times — before your exam date. You choose the unit the promise applies to when you claim.
- Submit your official PSI score report showing a not-passing result, within 30 days of your exam.
- One claim per exam part. Once approved, we add 3 months of Premium to your account free.
- The promise is a study benefit, not a money-back guarantee or a guarantee of passing — the SEE is graded by the IRS/PSI, not by us.
Enrolled Agent Center is an independent exam-preparation service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, or PSI.
Proficient Path FAQ
Why three times at 75%, not just once?
Because a single good score can be luck — an easy draw, a lucky guess or two. Clearing 75% three separate times, with shuffled answers and fresh questions, is strong evidence you've actually mastered the unit and will hold up on exam day.
Does practicing in Study mode count toward Proficient?
Yes. Any scored attempt on the unit that reaches 75% counts, whether it was a Study-mode or Exam-mode session. Exam mode is the truer test of readiness, but both build your record.
Which units count toward the promise?
You reach Proficient on the unit you select for the promise. Free units count too — you don't have to be Premium to see your readiness ratings, only to unlock every unit's full question set.
What if my subscription isn't active when I sit the exam?
The promise only applies if you're an active Monthly or Annual subscriber on the day you take the exam. If your plan lapsed before your exam date, the promise doesn't apply — so if you have a test booked, keep your subscription active through that date.
How do I claim the 3 free months if I don't pass?
Send us your PSI score report within 30 days of the exam. Once we confirm you met the terms above, we add 3 months of Premium to your account.
